ABORIGINAL CULTURE..LETS EXPLORE:
What do we know? - Students may like to share their life experiences with either having a family member or friend who is aboriginal and the differences and/or similarities they observed. - By respecting all the cultures in the class, have each child present their family history. ( note in this context: if an aboriginal child is unaware of their history it is your role of educator to help them find out as much as possible)
Who tells us this information?
What are some stereotypes and generalisations people may have about Aboriginal people, their culture and history?
What do we want to know? - Divide the students into small groups, the teacher will give each group an aspect of Aboriginal History and/or Culture to research. Using reliable sources of information, the group will gather relevant and factual information and present their findings in an imaginative and creative form.
Other HSIE lessons throughout the term can consist of: Examines firsthand accounts of Indigenous people’s experiences Examines the cultural diversity that exists in Australia today including languages spoken. Identifies ways in which education, religion and culture influence the viewpoints people have about their own identity. Recognise examples of stereotyping, sexism and racism. Examines how cultural diversity cause cultural change including conflict situations. Develops an awareness of their own level of acceptance of different racial, ethnic, national and religious groups.
